Dual Diagnosis
Dual Diagnosis is the latest kick in the drug rehab business. In psychobable, that means that the person has co-occurring disorders; a mental illness AND substance abuse. To give an example of what Dual Diagnosis means in real life, supposing a person were to get totally strung out on heroin (or any other drug), so that his body was an unhealthy wreck, and his mind was messed up by the drug, in other words, a typical addict. Is it any wonder that such a person would then appear "depressed" or have an otherwise than "normal" mental attitude? That would be expected, wouldn't it? The logical solution in such a case would be to bring the person down off the drug, then get the drug completely out of their system, and then find and handle the reason they started on the drug in the first place. After that, the person could again live a "normal" life without any drugs or treatment. However, psychiatrists, using the subterfuge of a Dual Diagnosis, say the person is mentally ill AND addicted, which they say requires putting them on still another drug to handle the mental illness. Look, the person is messed up because he's addicted to one drug already. What kind of sense does it make to put them on still another addictive drug, which has side effects such as suicide and violence (see the FDA required Black Box warnings now required on anti-depressants and anti-psychotics, or read the side effects of each drug used for such "treatments" for more on this) and is often much harder to withdraw from than the original drug he was addicted to? Are these guys nuts? Information on Black Box Warnings can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_box_warning |
