Drug Rehabs Success Rates
WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE OF YOUR PROGRAM? Unfortunately there is not a standard definition for "Success Rate" for drug rehabs. Therefore, you will hear many rehab programs boast that they have the "Highest Success Rate in the country", etc.. But if one checks further, one finds that a good many of them consider it a success if the person merely completes their program, even if they relapse soon after. In fact, one will find that the majority of drug and alcohol rehab programs (even many of those boasting of their high success rate), only get from 2% to 20% permanently off of drug/alcohol, which is a pretty dismal record, really. Therefore, when checking out rehab programs, one should find out if the program considers that relapses are a normal part of the recovery process and judge accordingly. Those that consider relapse a normal part of the recovery process are not worth the time and expense, as quite frankly, their results are no better than the results one gets from simply being told to quit. Research has shown that about 20% will quit when told to do so. A good, workable definition of success rate for the investigator to use, is that upon completion of the program, the ex-addict is off of drugs and/or alcohol, restored physically and mentally to the condition they were in before they started using, and are able to function normally in life without continually going to meetings and without relapsing. |
