Differences in Drug Rehab programs

By Ken Kemmerer

Drug and alcohol rehab refers to a program where people who are struggling with substance abuse issues receive help. In California there are thousands of drug rehab facilities, each varying in the methods used and the care provided. For example, some addiction programs use the 12 steps model or some variation of it. Others use the therapeutic community, cognitive therapy or boot-camp approach. Still others use specific philosophies or religions as rehab methods. A popular approach is the use of holistic healing methods in recovery programs, such as meditation, yoga, acupuncture, acupressure, saunas and other physical fitness activities. Additionally, some drug/alcohol rehab programs prescribe another drug to deal with the condition, while others do not provide any medications, outside of medical detoxification. The drug-free programs believe it is not effective just putting the person on another addictive substance, and instead work to get to the root of the problem that started the person on his route to addiction in the first place.

Many drug rehab centers provide treatment based on the theory that alcoholism and drug addiction are diseases which are passed along generation to generation, predisposing those individuals whose parents or grandparents were addicts. The disease concept says that once a person becomes hooked on drugs or alcohol, the individual is never fully recovered, and is always at risk of relapse. As a result they must stay completely abstinent and attend meetings for the rest of their lives, in order to lead a healthy and productive lifestyle. In contrast, other addiction treatment proponents believe that drug and alcohol dependency can be completely overcome through proper treatment and education.

As you might suspect, there are wide variations in the effectiveness of drug rehab methods, with the majority getting only a measly 2% to 20% cure rate. That means that with the majority of rehab programs, after 100 people complete them, 80 to 98 of them will go back to their addiction, with only about a maximum of 20 staying clean. Incidentally, that is about the same cure rate (about 20%) that one gets from merely telling people they should stop, which has the advantage that it doesn't require a lot of money or take a lot of time.

At the other end of the spectrum are a select few programs that actually handle the original reason the person started drugs in the first place, and then go on and handle the other main reason that drug addicts relapse, while also giving them the tools they need to remain clean and sober. Those programs get an average of 80 out of 100 off drugs permanently.

Which type of program would you choose, if you actually had all the facts?
